Welcome to the ODA RPG forum! A little fun fact for you One Piece Role Players. If you're from or have heard of the Kaizouku Ou RPG forum, KO for short, this site is from the same creator! Don't get the wrong idea, this is not a clone of the original! It's a new forum, new growth system and of course new staff. Here at ODA, I want to focus on both In Character (IC) growth and Out of Character (OOC) growth. The IC growth is obviously is the growth of your character and the Out of Character growth hopes to focus on your skill as a role player! Take it all in slowly, everyone has their own pace. Don't try to abuse my Adventure System too much or it's going to kick you in the face!

I've been thinking about our controversial situation; death.

I made ODA such that members could grow in any way they wished in terms of writing, putting little limitations to what they desired and allowing them to have as much of their original ideas as possible. We as the staff are to act as the sign posts to keep them from writing improperly. Correcting their grammar, keeping the situations in the story to match the environment, making events members will enjoy and setting examples such that the newer members know what to aim for.

At the same time, ODA is homage to Oda Eichiro’s masterpiece and my favourite series. As far this tribute has gone we are very parallel to his ideas, except for his views on character death. A statement of death is few and far between and is never present in the direct story. Through out Luffy’s adventure we have not seen a supporting character croak, only a newsflash or flashback. The announcement of Vivi’s kingdom death count in the war. Inmates dying in the cold, Magellen’s poison or being eaten by the beasts. Animals killed to be turned into food. The only monumental stand alone death was the suicide at the auction. It took four hundred chapters to see that. That tells us death is a heavy matter in the One Piece world and I want it to be imprinted in our rules too.

So here is my solution;

The RE System

Retired. Refreshed. Recognized.

At any point in a member’s career as any given character they created they can retire that character by finishing their adventure log. After all any story that starts will ultimately have an end, the members will be allowed to write their ending in any fantastic, sadistic or glorious way. Death, peace, disappearance or even marriage. However, the Retirement in the RE System can be the worst punishment a member can get for committing the sin of Blackbeard, murder. If a character is used to take life, then their life is the collateral, an eye for an eye, rather a dream for a dream. With the end of an NPC’s life gone the member will lose their dream and be forced to retire. The ultimate price, for the greatest sin. Of course I hope we see more choosing than chastising.

The Refresh in the system is another path. The end of one journey leads to another. If a member chooses to retire they can settle down, marry, complete their dream and leave a legacy, the next generation. Ever wanted to have the perfect kid? Go make them! If you refresh your character, you can make a new character with three of the standard initial techniques and any two techniques from the parent character, plus, refreshed characters get nine free techniques over seven, plus any items from their parent characters. (Can only get the benefits if the parent character gets a three star staff approved ending.)

Recognized might be miniscule to the greedy, but maximum to the creative. Those that write a four star staff approved ending of their adventure log will be immortalize in the ODA realm the recognized character’s fame/infamy will be on par with the Pirate King Gol D. Roger himself. Their feats will be known in every nook and cranny of the five oceans and no one will not know of the recognized character.

So gentlemen, what do you think?

As I stated via Skype, I have no problems per say, but I can't see anyone using the "Refreshed/Recognized" portion of this. I had eventually planned a finale for Leon but that would be after he reached the Grand Line an everything. I don't know of anyone else that had planned something along those lines, though now I'm tempted to try it...

As I said, I don't see any problems with it, just a lack of usage. It'll be as frequently used as the Knight System... cry

Wow, this looks pretty awesome. I love these options about how to end/continue their adventure. We should definitely use something like this. Yet, Cross is right. This will rarely be used as no one is even close to finishing their characters yet. Of course, that doesn't mean this shouldn't be used.

With retired, I'm curious, does the member get any reward for this system, or is that character just gone? In the past, I remember some characters have suicided characters they don't want to use, and I remember nothing really happening. Would this system change that?

Refresh, I can see a few people using. Assuming they ever get that far. Recognized, I can only imagine a few people going to the effort.

Still, I'd say go for it.

Unless a character retires by dying, then they can still use that character.

RE System layout.

Note that this is a long term system, there is no way any member will be using this system besides being punished. (Hopefully that will never be the case.) The RE System is to satisfy the notion of death, explore non-battle-esque writing and expand ODA into something more than just 'fight, win, might is right.'

Ok members, here is a new system that solves our glaring issue in the One Piece and ODA universe; death.

Summary.

Retired;
-characters can choose to retire or forced to retire if they take a life. (Animals don’t count.)
-characters can still be used if they were not killed in their log or punished into retiring.

Refreshed;
-can be the offspring, pupil or former NPC that was introduced in a member’s adventure log or a completely new character who is tied to your Original Character.
-starts with five techniques. Three standard initial and two from the previous Original Character.
-instead of seven free techniques, refreshed characters get nine free before they need to get rewarded technique slots.
-can gain old items from the Original Character.

Recognized;
-if the entire staff approves of the final adventure log of a character they will become one of the most famous or infamous characters in the ODA universe.
-landmarks will be made for this character.
-island histories will be keyed to the character.
-new characters can aspire to surpass or even meet a recognized character.
-will be considered as a veteran and used as good examples for the site.
-has the potential to take a mod position if ever the need arise.
-can create settings that are based on their Original Character’s stories. (NOT general settings or events like the staff do.
